The Bridge Engineer & the Freak StormBridge Engineer

Imagine a bridge engineer reviewing 50 years of wind-speed data for a major crossing. The average wind speed looks perfectly safe. The standard deviation looks acceptable too. A model that assumes a normal distribution gives the green light.

But a senior analyst notices something the summary statistics hide: the wind data has an unusually heavy tail. Extreme gusts — the once-in-30-years kind — are far more likely than a normal distribution predicts. The bridge is redesigned for stronger gusts.

💡
This Is What Kurtosis Is AboutKurtosis

The mean tells you where your data is centred. The standard deviation tells you how spread out it is. Neither tells you how likely extreme values are. Kurtosis fills that gap — it measures how heavy a distribution's tails are compared with a normal distribution that has the same mean and SD.

In finance, many risk models assumed normal returns while real returns had fat tails, so extreme losses were badly underestimated before and during the 2007–2008 crisis. In engineering and insurance, heavy tails decide how big a once-in-a-century event can be. In machine learning, kurtosis helps you spot features dominated by rare extreme values before modelling.

Kurtosis in Pictures — Understand Before the Mathsतस्वीरों में Kurtosis — गणित से पहले समझें图解峰度 — 先理解,再算数

Kurtosis is one number, so you cannot point at it on a normal curve. But you can see where it comes from. Multiply the curve by z⁴ (the fourth power of the distance from the mean, in SDs). The area under that new shape is the kurtosis. Because of z⁴, a point 3 SD away counts 81 times more than a point 1 SD away — so the area piles up in the tails.

Lepto = slender (Greek) — Karl Pearson named it after the slender, pointed look of such curves.
Platy = broad, flat — like a "platypus" or a "plateau".
Meso = middle — the normal distribution in between.
The names describe the peak, but the number itself is driven by the tails (see Section 6).

Lepto = पतला (Greek) — Karl Pearson ने ऐसे curves के पतले, नुकीले रूप के कारण यह नाम दिया।
Platy = चौड़ा, सपाट — जैसे "platypus" या "plateau"।
Meso = बीच का — बीच में normal distribution.

Lepto = 纤细(希腊语)—— Karl Pearson 根据这类曲线纤细尖锐的外观命名。
Platy = 宽而平 —— 如 “platypus”(鸭嘴兽)或 “plateau”(高原)。
Meso = 中间 —— 居中的正态分布。

The Formula — Kurtosis & Excess KurtosisFormula — Kurtosis और Excess Kurtosis公式 — 峰度与超额峰度

Kurtosis is the standardised fourth central moment. Raising deviations to the fourth power makes it extremely sensitive to values far from the mean — which is exactly what we want when measuring tail weight.

Kurtosis standardised fourth central moment है।

Step 1
Mean: (18+20+20+21+21+21+22+22+23+32) / 10 = 220 / 10 = 22.0
Mean: (18+20+20+21+21+21+22+22+23+32) / 10 = 220 / 10 = 22.0
Step 2
Deviations and their fourth powers:
18→(−4)⁴ = 256 | 20→(−2)⁴ = 16 | 20→16
21→(−1)⁴ = 1 | 21→1 | 21→1
22→0 | 22→0 | 23→(1)⁴ = 1
32→(10)⁴ = 10,000 ← the outlier dominates
Step 3
Sum of fourth powers: 256+16+16+1+1+1+0+0+1+10,000 = 10,292
Step 4
Variance (÷ N): (16+4+4+1+1+1+0+0+1+100) / 10 = 12.8, so σ⁴ = 12.8² = 163.84
Step 5
Raw kurtosis = (10,292 / 10) / 163.84 = 1,029.2 / 163.84 = 6.28
Raw kurtosis = (10,292 / 10) / 163.84 = 1,029.2 / 163.84 = 6.28
Result
Excess kurtosis = 6.28 − 3 = +3.28 → leptokurtic, driven almost entirely by the one 32 °C day.
✅
Key Takeaway

The 32 °C day contributed 10,000 of the 10,292 total — 97%. The other nine values together contributed only 292. The fourth power magnifies extreme deviations so much that one unusual day can make a whole dataset look leptokurtic. Remove it and SciPy's excess kurtosis drops from 3.28 to about −0.04 (almost exactly normal).

Myth-Buster: Kurtosis Is About Tails, Not the PeakMyth-Buster: Kurtosis Tails

Many textbooks describe kurtosis as "peakedness". That is misleading. Because of the fourth power, values within ±1 SD of the mean contribute almost nothing to kurtosis; nearly all of it comes from the tails. Two counter-examples make this clear:

Where This Comes Fromयह बात कहाँ से आई出处

Statistician Peter Westfall summarised it in a 2014 paper titled "Kurtosis as Peakedness, 1905–2014. R.I.P.": kurtosis tells you about the tails (and outliers), and says very little about the shape of the peak. Many heavy-tailed distributions do have sharp peaks, which is why the old description stuck — but the peak is not what the number measures.

Statistician Peter Westfall ने 2014 के एक paper "Kurtosis as Peakedness, 1905–2014. R.I.P."

Leptokurtic — stock market returnsLeptokurtic — stock market returns

Daily stock returns are the classic leptokurtic example. Most days are quiet, close to zero. But crashes and rallies (Black Monday 1987, the 2008 crisis, March 2020) produce moves that a normal distribution with the same SD treats as practically impossible. This is the "fat tails" problem in finance.

In August 2007, as the credit crisis began, Goldman Sachs' CFO David Viniar told the Financial Times: "We were seeing things that were 25-standard deviation moves, several days in a row." Under a normal distribution a single 25-SD day should essentially never happen in the lifetime of the universe. The lesson is not that the universe was unlucky — it is that the models' normal tails were far too thin.

August 2007 में, जब credit crisis शुरू हो रहा था, Goldman Sachs के CFO David Viniar ने Financial Times से कहा: "We were seeing things that were 25-standard deviation moves, several days in a row."

Platykurtic — bounded scores and uniform dataPlatykurtic — सीमित scores और uniform data低峰 —— 有界分数与均匀数据

Imagine a school where grades can only fall between 40 and 80 and are spread fairly evenly across that range. Nobody scores 5 or 98 — the extremes are cut off. This distribution is close to uniform, with excess kurtosis near −1.2: platykurtic. In manufacturing, a process where every part outside the tolerance is rejected also produces light tails among the parts that are shipped, because the extremes are removed.

Adult heights within one sex in a large population are close to a normal distribution — the textbook mesokurtic case. Very tall and very short people exist, but at about the rate the normal distribution predicts. Excess kurtosis ≈ 0.

Excess kurtosis ≈ 0.

Uniform, normal and Laplace land close to their theoretical values. The t distribution with df = 5 gives 8.3 instead of 6, even with 100,000 points — heavy tails make kurtosis hard to estimate (see Section 9).

Student's t — The Classic Fat-Tail DistributionStudent's t — Fat-Tail

The t distribution is leptokurtic, and its excess kurtosis is 6 / (df − 4) for df > 4: 6 at df = 5, 1 at df = 10, about 0.23 at df = 30. For df ≤ 4 it is infinite, so a sample estimate never settles — the five seeds above give anything from 17 to 157. As df grows, t approaches the normal distribution. That is also why t-tests use it for small samples: estimating σ from few data points adds extra uncertainty, which shows up as heavier tails.

from scipy import stats
import numpy as np

# Two models of daily returns with the SAME standard deviation (1 unit)
normal = stats.norm()
t5 = stats.t(df=5, scale=np.sqrt(3 / 5))      # t(5) rescaled to variance 1

days = 10_000
for k in (3, 4, 5):
    pn = 2 * normal.sf(k)
    pt = 2 * t5.sf(k)
    print(f"|move| > {k} SD:  normal {pn * days:7.1f} days   t(5) {pt * days:7.1f} days")
OUTPUT
|move| > 3 SD: normal 27.0 days t(5) 117.2 days |move| > 4 SD: normal 0.6 days t(5) 35.7 days |move| > 5 SD: normal 0.0 days t(5) 13.3 days

With the same SD, a t(5) model expects about 36 days beyond 4 SD in 10,000 days; the normal model expects fewer than one. That gap is tail risk.

Kurtosis depends on the rarest, most extreme values — exactly the ones a sample is most likely to miss or to catch by luck. So sample kurtosis jumps around much more than the mean or SD. With heavy tails it is also usually too low, until a rare extreme value lands in the sample and makes it far too high.

Golden RulesGolden Rules

🎯 Kurtosis — Key RulesKurtosis —
1
Kurtosis measures tail weight, not peakedness. A flat-topped curve can have high kurtosis and a pointy triangle low kurtosis. Read it as "how much do rare, extreme values matter here?"
2
Know exactly what your tool returns. SciPy: excess, population formula by default. pandas and Excel: excess with a small-sample correction. Some textbooks: raw (normal = 3). The same data gave 3.28, 6.28 and 6.77.
3
Kurtosis is extremely sensitive to outliers. One value supplied 97% of the fourth-power sum in our example. Always plot the data and check whether one point is driving the number.
4
Do not trust a kurtosis from a small sample. Even for normal data, n = 50 gives a wide range of values; with heavy tails, even 100,000 points may not be enough.
5
Fat tails mean higher real-world risk. In finance, insurance and engineering, leptokurtic data means extreme events happen far more often than a normal model with the same SD predicts. Check the tails before trusting any model that assumes normality.
6
Use kurtosis together with skewness and a plot. Skewness describes asymmetry, kurtosis describes the tails, and a histogram (ideally also on a log scale or as a Q-Q plot) shows what both numbers mean.
